Mount Merbabu, is a dormant stratovolcano in Central Java province on the Indonesian island of Java. The name Merbabu could be loosely translated as 'Mountain of Ash' from the Javanese combined words; Meru means "mountain" and awu or abu means "ash". Two known moderate eruptions occurred in 1560 and 1797. The 1797 event was rated 2: Explosive, on the volcanic explosivity index. An unconfirmed eruption may have occurred in 1570.
There are two peaks: Syarif (3,119 m) and Kenteng Songo (3,145 m). Three U-shaped radial valleys extend from the Kenteng Songo summit in northwesterly, northeasterly, and southeasterly directions. An area of 57 square kilometres (22 sq mi) at the mountain has been declared as a national park in 2004.
Merbabu can be climbed from several routes originating from the town of Kopeng on the northeast side, and also from Selo on the southern side. A climb from Kopeng to Kenteng Songo takes between 8 and 10 hours
For beginners who want to conquer Mount Merbabu, there are several important things to consider. Take a look at this special guide to make your hike smooth and safe!
Recommended Routes For beginners
This mountain has an easy climbing path. There are at least five trails that climbers can pass to get to the top. For beginners, of course, you have to choose a track that is not too heavy. The five lines are the Selo Line, Suwanting Line, Wekas Line, Cunthel Line, and Thekelan Line. Of the five routes, the most commonly used is the route via Selo. This route is known to be the friendliest to climbers because it can do trekking casually and not too extremely.
The Selo Trail is in Dusun Pakis, Desa Tarubatang, Selo District, Boyolali. This line will take about five hours to get to the top of Merbabu. Compared to the Suwanting route, trekking via the Selo route is longer. The Suwanting route is only three hours if it is done without a break. Although longer, the Selo route is familiar to beginner climbers. The contour of the road is somewhat sloping when compared to the other four routes which are steeper. When starting to go to post 1, climbers will feel a long journey from basecamp, It takes about an hour. In post 1 there are also many monkeys. So you have to be careful so that you don't get disturbed.
The journey through the Selo trail offers cool and breathtaking views. When you arrive at the basecamp, you will immediately be treated to a view of Mount Merapi which is located on the south side of Merbabu. But it must be remembered, even though the path is sloping, it does not mean that the condition is completely smooth. The route via Selo still has hilly roads. And it also needs a strong physical condition, however because of the beauty offered, the tiredness will disappear instantly. Especially when you can get to Post 4 and Post 5. From the two posts, you can see directly the green expanse of the green and wide savannah. Most climbers in Merbabu use these two posts as a location to spend the night there. Interestingly, this mountain has two peaks, namely Tembang/kenteng Songo, and Syarif Peak. So, if you're not satisfied with conquering one peak, you can set foot on another peak.
